Equal Citizens Announces Video Competition to Promote Legal Argument to Regulate SuperPACs in Massachusetts and Across the U.S.

Boston – Today, Equal Citizens began crowd-funding to launch a video competition that will ask Americans across the country to create compelling videos explaining why — contrary to conventional legal wisdom — SuperPACs can be regulated.

“Since 2010, lawyers in America have assumed that SuperPACs are required by the First Amendment. But this assumption is based on a clear mistake,” said Equal Citizens founder and Harvard Law Professor Lawrence Lessig. “And it’s time that we make that mistake even clearer. We are going to raise a massive financial prize for whoever can best make this point.”

Equal Citizens has set the fundraising goal at $50,000. If this goal is met, the video competition will be launched. Creators will be asked to distill the legal argument explained in a stem file into whatever creative form most effectively demonstrates the argument. The argument in the stem file is based on the argument presented by Free Speech for People in the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

The winner of the competition will be chosen by a panel of judges that include Hollywood influencers. The winning entry will win, at minimum, $50,000.
